Traditionally, effective early shampoos was made by boiling Sapindus with dried Indian gooseberry (amla) and a few other herbs, using the strained extract. Sapindus, also known as soapberries or soapnuts, and its fruit pulp contain saponins which are a natural surfectant. The extract of soapberries, a tropical tree widespread in India, creates a lather and is also known for its detangling properties. It leaves the hair soft, shiny and manageable. Other herbs used for hair are shikakai (Acacia concinna), soapnuts (Sapindus), hibiscus flowers, henna, brahmi to name a few.
